Serene Sacred Music for Sunday

Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine,
Vere passum immolatum in Cruce pro homine,
Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine,
Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.

Hail, true body born of the Virgin Mary,
Who truly suffered, sacrificed on the Cross for man,
Whose pierced side overflowed with water and blood,
Be for us a foretaste In the test of death.

  1. After listening to eight or nine different recordings, I found this to be the most sensitive and the most powerful.

Other excellent versions may be found at YouTube. Of those Westiminster Cathedral Choir, and King's College Chapel were strong contenders for today's featured spot here.

As someone who has been deeply involved in liturgical music all his life from the age of eight on, I naturally love to hear various interpretations of great works of music like this. Once you "get into it," as they say today, learning how to note and appreciate the subtle differences among various interpretations becomes fascinating and adds a great deal of joy to life.
