I took my Power in my Hand –

And went against the World –
'Twas not so much as David – had –
But I -- was twice as bold –

I aimed by Pebble – but Myself
Was all the one that fell –
Was it Goliath – was too large –
Or was myself – too small?

~ Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

  1. We like to believe that we can win every battle. The reality is that we cannot.

David defeated Goliath because God took David's side. Without that advantage, could David really have won?

  2. I look at it from a different perspective, myself, AOW. I believe David won -- if, indeed, this incident ever did occur at all -- because of the strength and courage his FAITH in GOD gave him.

It was the very same Power that made it possible for the Pilgrims and the Pioneers to survive and develop a viable Civilization in the untamed wilderness.

  3. FT,
No argument with what you said.

I think that our two statements are two sides of the same coin -- and not at all antithetical.

  4. That's an excellent way of putting it, AOW. Thank you.

I do believe it is impossible for us to separate ourselves from God. We are as much a part of Him as He is of us, but because of the problem -- or privilege -- of having Free Will -- we often feel compelled to do things that are not in harmony with His will. This, of course, sets up a terrible tension within us which gives rise to most of the dreadful things we should wish to avoid -- i.e. disease, dysfunction, depression, anger, resentment, lack of patience, jealousy, hypocrisy, dishonesty, the desire to wreak vengeance, to steal, to murder, etc.

With God all things are possible. Without Him we becomes pitiful -- and deadly dangerous.

  5. Very Interesting, I think before we get in to any more “David and Goliath” encounters, we make sure that as a nation we have the moral backing of the populace. Maybe that’s why Goliath-Obama (the software engineer) backed down on Syria?
