Letter from My Congressman
A new report reaffirms the sad truth that Washington’s addiction to spending has placed our nation on the same perilous road as Greece. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has concluded the U.S. economy will slide into a “significant recession” unless steps are taken to address our fiscal crisis.
The CBO's dire forecast should serve as a wake up call to those in Washington to cut spending, lower the debt, and restore fiscal sanity to the halls of Congress. Unfortunately, it seems that Washington never runs out of ways to waste taxpayers’ money in breathtaking fashion. Consider the following:
• The Obama Administration reportedly paid out $500,000 in federal stimulus funds to run a green jobs ad campaign on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “Countdown With Keith Olbermann.” The Labor Department contract listed zero jobs created as a result of the ad purchase.
• Only one month after their lavish $800,000 Las Vegas gathering, the General Services Administration (GSA) held a one-day awards ceremony for "good employees" at a cost of $268,000.
• The federal Environmental Protection Agency recently spent $100 million on overseas projects that included studying pig manure in Thailand, reducing pollution in China and improving air quality in Indonesia under the “Breathe Easy Jakarta” program.
For these reasons, and many more, I am fighting to pass legislation that will withhold congressional pay until a federal budget is passed. It has been over three years since Congress last passed a budget to pay down our nearly $16 trillion debt. The American people deserve better. The appropriately named "No Budget, No Pay Act" will send a long overdue message that Washington is serious about tackling our nation's financial mess once and for all.
We can't wait until November, the time to act is now!
As always, please let me know what you think.
