The Passion of Our Lord

(Sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle)

Lord Jesus Christ has come to town
   a riding on a donkey
The Romans saw a challenge
tried of Him to make a monkey.

Hail! King Jesus of the Jews
   riding on a burro
Shout hosannas loud today
   then crucify tomorrow.

Jesus took His followers
   into the Upper Room
He fed them on His body and blood
and told them of His doom.

Then to Dark Gethsemane
   a praying in the garden
Begging of His father
from His bitter cup to pardon.

Peter, faithless, thrice denied
   that His Lord he kneweth
Judas kissed Him in betrayal
   evil from him speweth.

“Hail, King Jesus of the Jews!”
   shouted in derision
Drag your cross to Golgotha
   that is the crowd’s decision.

Then they crowned Him cruelly
   with strands of pyrocanthus,
Nailed Him to the dogwood tree
which broke His feet and hands thus.

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
   only said, “Forgive them”
Of the crowd and soldiers wild’
who knew not He’d outlive them.

After tortures barbarous
He said, “I have a thirst.”
They only gave Him vinegar
   which really was the worst.

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
   then gave up the Ghost
Broken and defamed, reviled
   just like a Friar’s Roast!

Then, they laid Him in a tomb
   with all the Marys weeping
She who bore him in her womb
   thought He’d be always sleeping.

But, He showed them three days hence
   when He was resurrected
That the worst developments
   by faith can be corrected.

  1. That was a beautiful passage of scripture! I'm So thankful for your work on this blog Free Thinke. It's too bad that your nemesis on the Left can't get her head out of her behind and write as you do.

  4. I'm surprised the left hasn't found an "alternative less offensive" holiday for us to revile.

I just want to wish everyone,

    even you bed wetters

a wonderful Easter Holiday as we reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the glory of His deeds.

  5. FT! Love the version! Americana at it's best!

When I was in the hospital for a while last year, and discovered that I was very sick, a good friend of mine was at church, and his church was having group prayers for various folks, he asked if they would pray for me. When they realized who he was asking them to pray for (I have a unique name they all knew for years as my weekly Wednesday night customers at the restaurant I managed), the pastor and his assistant decided to come and visit me. Before so, they asked my friend what my religion was or if I was religious at all, and he explained that I was not religious, but that I was theologically well-versed, and always very respectful of other people's faiths (I would scold 'the kids' when they would say anything disrespectful or ignorant of other people's faiths, and remind them of their own ostensible faiths when they did something hypocritical, like flippantly sleeping around, or mistreating one another, and so forth).

So, the Pastor and his assistant came to visit me in my hospital room a few times. We'd hold hands, and they'd say a nice prayer for me, and it was very heartwarming. Really made me feel better, loved. It meant a lot to me.

They kinda tip-toed around my beliefs at first, but it did come up, as they can't help but proselytize (it's their job, after all!). So the Pastor asked, "(Your friend) told us you are not religious, but we don't think of ourselves as 'religious' either, so, do you believe in God, or is it just that you have a distaste for 'organized' religion?" I explained, "I guess you could say I'm an atheist, though some would say I'm agnostic, and though I have a personal sort of spirituality similar to the 'stream of consciousness' variety, I do not believe in God or the supernatural. However, I'm a huge fan of Jesus, and have nothing against 'organized religion' per se." They seemed a little confused. So they utilized a popular argument for faith - the 'what do you have to lose?' question - but I responded that my integrity meant a lot to me and that it would be hypocritical and dishonest of me to simply become "Christian" just for the "just in case" scenario, and it wouldn't be fair and respectful to the faithful and their church.

They then reminded me that Jesus had died for my sins. This is where I more firmly asserted my position. "I do not want anyone to take my sins upon themselves, let alone die for them, and I don't concern myself with things like 'life after death.' My attitude is if God exists, and there is a Judgement, I'd like to think He'd judge me well. If he doesn't, then that's that." They reminded me that such is a popular argument, but not a very good one, theologically, as one must "accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior" or the judgement is already not going to go well. But I reminded them that I simply can't "accept" something I do not believe. I had no other argument to fall back on, what else could I honestly say?

All the same, they kept visiting and praying with me, and it was lovely and deeply appreciated. After all, they really believe, and they live that belief, and to me, as I told them, that shows what good and consistently good people they are. In that, I told them, I envied them. I often wish I could believe things on faith. But it's not in my mental constitution. It can be freeing, to be like me, but it can be scary and and lonely too.

One of the nicest things about faith is the hopefulness, the good feelings, it endows, even to others who do not share a particular faith. I have another dear friend down here in Florida that I must come to visit as soon as I can travel. I'll be sure to remind him of how his faith and the way he shows it has been so wonderful to me. ;) Truly blessed are the faithful!

    1. Many of us have been beaten up by the world and the schemes of the devil. We have been beaten up so much that we can start believing lies that we aren’t good enough, that we have to pass more tests - that we will never get past the next test because we have failed this one so many times. The Lord impressed this thought upon me:

    2. I had a very lucky life. I can't complain. When things went wrong - the recession, my wife getting sick, me getting sick, some other tragedies that happened - I was well aware of why these things happened (though my illness remains a bit of a mystery), but I don't blame the Devil. There is no Devil I know of. But there are diseases, there is greed and corruption, there are the deranged. Can't do much to address these things if we don;t accept them for what they are! ;)

You were joking when you wrote this, right? Hadda be. A couple a hundred years ago, this coulda gotten ya hauled up in front of a church court who'da sentenced you to be turtured, then burned at the stake. Now that only happens to people who mock Mahomet. Your lucky to be living today.

  7. Nice one! I'd never heart that one before.

Reminds me of a buddy of mine who plays guitar and sings "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun."

    Try it, it fits perfectly.
