My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night,
But Ah! my friends,
And Ah! my foes,
It sheds a lovely light.
~ Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)

I'm always burning the candle at both ends! In fact, I did a bit of that both yesterday and today.
ReplyDeleteWe read this poem when I was in high school. For some inexplicable reason, our teacher, an elderly professor from The Netherlands, hated that bit of verse. I don't recall why, but I knew that he was waaaay off base in his understanding of life -- never mind all the living experience that he had at the time.

ReplyDeleteSafe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand:
ReplyDeleteCome and see my shining palace built upon the sand!

CUT if you will, with Sleep's dull knife,
Each day to half its length, my friend,--
The years that Time takes off my life,
He'll take from the other end!
I tend to stay away from flames altogether. I much prefer the soft glow of incandescent light. Much safer.

Dorothy Parket penned a wicked satire of Millay's famous verse:
ReplyDeleteMy candle burns at both its ends,
And now I've neither foes nor friends.
For hours wasted and misbegotten
I'm all worn out, and feeling rotten.
