Three Amazing Young Ladies
MEET THE ROSS SISTERS

After the singing stops, the fun really begins.

Just you wait and see.

Was anybody you knew ever quite this young and strong and agile?

The astonishing song and dance sequence was filmed in 1944, when you had to have real talent and lots of self-discipline to make it in show business.

People may have been made a little differently back then, because no one I've ever known could do anything quite like this.

The movie may have been forgettable, but once you've experienced it, the memory of these three girls performing this routine will never leave you.

 It's Ab-So-LOOT-Lee MIND BOGGLING.

  1. These girls most certainly defy gravity. If only they could defy its' bird-like "spirit". ;)

And especially that I am hostile to the spirit of gravity, that is birdnature:--verily, deadly hostile, supremely hostile, originally hostile! Oh, whither hath my hostility not flown and misflown!

Thereof could I sing a song--and WILL sing it: though I be alone in an empty house, and must sing it to mine own ears.

Other singers are there, to be sure, to whom only the full house maketh the voice soft, the hand eloquent, the eye expressive, the heart wakeful:-those do I not resemble.

  2. Good Lord!

Even at my most agile and flexible, I could never have done anything like what these girls did!

Back in the day, I looked forward every week to watching The Hollywood Palace. Most weeks, the show offered a presentation of acrobats or other amazing feats. The show had musical and comedy segments, too, of course.

HERE is the final show. Amazing what one can find on YouTube!

  3. AMAZING! I always appreciated the Andrews Sisters but the Ross Sisters offered a complete new dimension. I had never heard of them before.

  4. If you look up the Ross Sisters, Jon, you'll not find much on them. As singers they were just "competent," and had nowhere near the unique pizzazz of the Andrews Sisters.

The Rosses were distinguished only by their phenomenal athletic ability as synchronized contortionists. That limited them, -- made them a sort of "One Trick Pony" in the entertainment business. Despite this astonishing filmed sequence, The Ross Sisters never had much of a career, and little is known about their ultimate fate.

Each of them was under eighteen when this fabulous sequence was filmed. That would mean the eldest was born c. 1926. That would make her NINETY-years old in 2006, and NINETY-SEVEN today.

It's possible certainly that all three may still be alive, but I would say its improbable.

I did a small amount of research on the Ross girls and found little to go on. You're welcome to make a project of learning more, if the idea appeals. I'll be glad to publish your report whenever it's ready.

    Sincerely,

    FT
