PRACTICAL WISDOM
from POETRY

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
 Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
 To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
  The higher he 's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
 And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
 When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
 Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
   You may for ever tarry.

 ~ Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

____________ FINDING FUN ____________

It's easier to bitch than stitch,
It's easier to whine than mine.
It's easier to make noise than to exhibit poise.
It's easier to say "I'm fucked," than to construct.
To sit in the gutter counting your woes
In shit-caked jeans with a runny nose
Ranting in puddles of frozen piss
Demonstrates only that something's amiss.

So, in the bleak winter
Go shovel some snow ––

..... Cheer up the aged
...... And those who are caged
...... Some joy you might find
...... If you read to the blind
...... Don't play the whore,
...... Instead scrub the floor

Now get up and go!

In summer, each lazy laddie
And each slothful lass
Should get off their ass
And go mow the grass.

Don't pout and make wishes
Just go wash the dishes.
If you need to find labor,
Go help your neighbor.

Demanding is easy
Producing is hard
Protests are sleazy
Thus saith The Bard.

_________ EPILOGUE _________

There's always something you can do.
Don't succumb to feeling blue.
Salvation lies through helping others
Not thinking you deserve your druthers.

Never worry. Never fear.
Just do your best to spread good cheer.
Needed work is never done
Effort's where we find our fun.

And if you're old, and stuck at home,
You can always write a poem!

  1. Thank you for the poetry selections, including your own work!

Nice readings as I enjoy a morning cup of tea and look out over the countryside. Ah, to be young again.

  2. Boo!

Herrick's "rosebuds" symbolize ORGASMS! So all you VIRGINS... Carpe Diem! Don't "labour". SMELL the ROSES and GATHER THEIR BUDS! :P

    1. BOO to you too, FJ!

All that French Thought certainly appaears to be making a dour, hard-bitten old cynic out of you.

      Don't read..
      Don't bleed.
      Don't write a screed.
Instead go help someone in need.

    2. ...and leave an old grasshopper to tend to his own hopping. What ants do with THEIR time is nothing to me.

  3. UPON THE NIPPLES OF JULIA'S BREAST

HAVE ye beheld (with much delight)
A red rose peeping through a white ?
Or else a cherry, double grac'd,
    Within a lily centre plac'd ?
Or ever mark'd the pretty beam
    A strawberry shows half-drown'd in cream ?
Or seen rich rubies blushing through
A pure smooth pearl and orient too ?
So like to this, nay all the rest,
Is each neat niplet of her breast.

    1. Come, let us goe, while we are in our prime;
And take the harmlesse follie of the time.
We shall grow old apace, and die
      Before we know our liberty.
Our life is short; and our dayes run
As fast away as do's the Sunne:
And as a vapour, or a drop of raine
Once lost, can ne'r be found againe.

    1. ____________ __On the Floe ______________

The sun is setting in the east these days.
The north pole traveled southward long ago.
The penguins in the tropics now wear leis.
The roses in the tundra sweetly blow.

The tides receding come in nevermore.
The geese now migrate from the south to north.
The ocean vast is nothing now but shore.
The semen towards the egg will not come forth.

Negativity we worship now as god.
      Perversity is wholesome; Virtue’s vile.
      Normality’s regarded now as odd.
Whatever’s queer is welcomed with a smile.

Darkness has become the Guiding Light.
To stay alive we must not fight the Blight.

    3. _____ DESIGN for LIVING ______

We're only here for a little stay
      Don't worry.
      Don't hurry,
      Just be sure to stop
And smell the flowers along the way.
