AH, the IRONY of it all!

  1. I see synchronicity!

My post for tomorrow is "Ah, the Irony." And, yes, the post is related to ObamaCare.

  2. Interesting how history provides no voice or explanation for occasional odd flips. Honest humans must do that task.

Methinks the Dixiecrats of old figure into the Republican record of the last 75 year's or so.

It is interesting how the republicans have changed since Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

  3. Let's see, we start with the error of comparing amendments to legislation.

Then we move to the sheer silliness of claiming no Democratic states ratified the 18th, as an example.

Lame even for a right winger.

The Republican Party -- The party of Jesse Helms. Be proud.

  4. Duck,
The Democratic Party -- the Party of Anthony Wiener.

Plenty of examples to go around.

  5. speaking of pride, are you still feeling Robert Byrd, ducky?

  6. Thersite and Free... any comparison of the GOP of 75 years ago and the GOP of today is idiotic. Just the same as any comparison of the Democratic Party would be.

Look at the times... those that championed civil rights were the progressives of their day and those that stood against them, we're supporting the conservative order.

Can, or will either of you speak to that?

  7. Sure, underlying this "conservative" support lies one of the basic tenets of classical liberalism, the classical conception of "justice" which entails, "every man doing his best WITHOUT interference from others."

This basic tenet is, however, OPPOSED by another classical tenet, "wisdom", which entails knowing WHEN to violate the "justice" tenet and ACTIVELY INTERFERE in the activities of others.

It may have indeed been the right time, in the 60's, to undue an ancient "injustice" that had trapped a noble race in perpetual injustice.... but generally... it is "unwise" to perform "injustices" to right "historic" injustices. For the "wisdom" of conserving the gains achieved places the entire edifice of "customs" formerly established, at risk. For it is through "custom" that all perceptions of fairness and justice exist (Pascal, "Pensees")

    1. Well said Thetsites.

Customs, sometimes formed out of ignorance, prejudice, or both can be quite troublesome for a changing society and the new realities change brings with it.

Humans are creatures of habit, tending to cling to the known old rather than embrace the new or unknown.

It is wise to proceed with eyes and mind open and active. In that order methinks.

  8. The last time Republicans tried to "right" an historic "wrong", half a million Americans died.

  9. "Progressives" are enamored of doing their best to fluster their adversaries with a fusillade of FACTS. They just adore FACTS -- especially when these FACTS taken out of context, and used to support THEIR prejudices and THEIR agenda.

The point of this exercise was to indicate how misleading FACTS can be when deprived of both context and nuance.

Most of you got it, but failed to discern my purpose in posting this material.

    Some Good Advice:

    Never ASSUME anything -- EVER.

And, of course, adopt Walt Whitman's excellent motto, and make it your own:

    BE CURIOUS; NOT JUDGMENTAL.

We'd all get along much better if we did that.
