All Hallows Eve
Trick or treating, barren branches claw
On rooftops ‘gainst the biting Autumn air.
Jack O’Lantern flickers. Would he gnaw
An arm away, or set aflame the hair ––
Conspicuously real above the masks ––
Kindling Kindergartners at the door?
Only Satan’s own perform such tasks,
Leering, lisping, limping as to war.
Awake! All Hallows Eve lets loose the ghosts.
No one escapes the Grave for long. Be wise.
The Jack O’Lanterns flicker on the posts ––
Each one a sentry for the Lord of Flies.
Run home to mother lest the Evil One
Nabs you, while you think you’re having fun.

ReplyDeleteAOW, are you SURE you really want to link this item to your blog this morning?
ReplyDeleteThere's every possibility it might set your place on fire.
This is no ordinary Jack O' Lantern here. The is THE Jack O' Lantern, you know.
"Run home to mother lest the Evil One
NABS you while you THINK you're having fun!"
Are you SURE you want to take such a risk?
Are you sure your own blog constituents are strong enough to resist such a powerful deadly force?
"AWAKE! All Hallows Eve lets loose the ghosts.
No one escapes the Grave for long. Be wise.
The Jack O’Lanterns flicker on the posts ––
Each one a sentry for the Lord of Flies."
Today would be better called All Gallows Evil.
Very nice. You set the mood perfectly.
ReplyDeleteSince you and your visitors are into poetry, may I suggest you visit Andie's blog?
She has written a most excellent poem as well:
On Blackbird's Wings
I'ss say here what I said at AOW's blog:
ReplyDeleteI'm not scared [whistling past the graveyard and walking fast] ;-)
Good one, I'm ready!
ReplyDeleteHere's one for those who hold the holiday in disdain...
ReplyDeleteMais certainment, FJ! Nous aimerons Henri le chat, blanc et noir, "existentialist" beaucoup.
