I Didn't Go to Church Today
I didn’t go to church today,
I trust the Lord to understand.
The surf was swirling blue and white,
The children swirling on the sand.
I trust the Lord to understand.
The surf was swirling blue and white,
The children swirling on the sand.
He knows, He knows how brief my stay,
How brief this spell of summer weather,
He knows when I am said and done
We’ll have plenty of time together.
~ Ogden Nash (1902-1971)
I am off to church.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!
Excellent Lord's Day post, FT.
ReplyDeleteMr. AOW and I don't often attend church -- for obvious physical reasons. But we can get the services on the web.
Some keep the Sabbath going to Church
ReplyDeleteI keep it staying at home
With a bobolink for a chorister --
And an Orchard for a Dome.
Some keep the Sabbath in surplice.
I just spread my wings --
And instead of ringing the Bell for Church
Our little Sexton sings.
God preaches -- a noted Clergyman --
And the Sermon is never long --
So instead of getting to Heaven at last
I'm going all along.
~ Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
Who ever realizes how wonderful life is while they are living it?
"The saints and poets -- they do -- some."
~ Thornton Wilder - Our Town
"The Kingdom of God is in you."
May you have mind-expanding, soul-nourishing, joyfully loving experience today.
~ FreeThinke
DId no ine note the poignancy in Mr. Nash's verse? It's unusually sober and reflective for him -- far from his usual tongue-in-cheek, almost flippant style.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't live very long.
Perhaps he had a premonition of early demise when he wrote this poem?
