In HONOR of MEMORIAL DAY, 2017

Hail, Columbia.” an American patriotic song,  was considered, with several other songs, one of the unofficial national anthems of the United States until 1931, when "The Star-Spangled Banner" was officially named the national anthem.

Hail Columbia

Hail Columbia, happy land!
Hail, ye heroes, heaven-born band,
Who fought and bled in freedom's cause,
Who fought and bled in freedom's cause,
And when the storm of war was gone
Enjoy'd the peace your valor won.
Let independence be our boast,
Ever mindful what it cost;
Ever grateful for the prize,
Let its altar reach the skies.

Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Immortal patriots, rise once more,
Defend your rights, defend your shore!
Let no rude foe, with impious hand,
Let no rude foe, with impious hand,
Invade the shrine where sacred lies
Of toil and blood, the well-earned prize,
While offering peace, sincere and just,
In Heaven's we place a manly trust,
That truth and justice will prevail,
And every scheme of bondage fail.

Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Behold the chief who now commands,
Once more to serve his country stands.
The rock on which the storm will break,
The rock on which the storm will break,
But armed in virtue, firm, and true,
His hopes are fixed on Heav'n and you.
When hope was sinking in dismay,
When glooms obscured Columbia's day,
His steady mind, from changes free,
Resolved on death or liberty.

Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.

Sound, sound the trump of fame,
Let Washington's great fame
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Let every clime to freedom dear,
Listen with a joyful ear,
With equal skill, with God-like power
He governs in the fearful hour
Of horrid war, or guides with ease
The happier time of honest peace.

Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.

~ Words by Joseph Hopkinson (1770-1842)
Music by Philip Phile (1734-1793)

  2. I think people were confusing it with the Colombian national anthem, which goes like this...

    "Hail Colombia, hyperactive land!
Hail, ye heroes, and Starbucks brand,
Who fought and bled in cocaine's cause,
Who fought and bled in coffee's cause,
And when the storm of war was gone
    Enjoy'd more war..."

    1. Jersey, I don't think it appropriate to mock Mr. Hopkinson's sentiments on what-should-be-a solemn occasion, even thiugh they must seem quaint to our modern ears. But, considering what has hapened to this once-blessed nation in the past fifty-plus years I understand why the temptation to satirize would be strong.

Hope you are doing better than could be expected, man. It ALWAYS helps to count ur blessings no matter WHAT.

Positive thinking may not be able to destroy all the evil in the world, or keep us safe and free from harm, BUT it certainly helps to make it more possible to endure the pain and grief we all must suffer sooner or later.

Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I shall fear no evil, for Thou art with me ..."

      ~ Psalm 23

"God is our refuge and strength –– a very present help in trouble ––, therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and the mountains carried into the midst of the sea, and the waters, thereof, roar and be troubled ..."

      ~ Psalm 46

  3. United? How I wish it were so!

But I did see some united people today: Rolling Thunder has arrived. With flags unfurling, they roar past our house.

    1. Kid,
None of us who did not serve know what sacrifice was made by those who did.

And none of us who did not serve can possibly know what the families of those who serve must endure.

One of my former homeschool families has a father who is active duty Navy. He has a wife and three children; one child is a freshman in college, one child is a sophomore in high school, and one child is a sixth grader.

This Commander in the Navy is two years from retirement and has just been deployed to Japan. He will be serving aboard ship for the foreseeable future. His last deployment relates to the saber rattling being done by North Korea. His wife is worried sick -- but hardly ever allows her fears to show.

  5. AOW, Well one thing as the parent of a daughter in law serving at an Iraq MASH three different times can say - is you dread the sound of the doorbell ringing each and every day wondering if you'll open the door and see a couple in dress uniform outside.

It is very hard to have family away even in the best of times.

    1. Kid,
Even though I was a military wife during the first several months that Mr. AOW and I were married, I was never as stressed as you describe. He served stateside and during a time when serving stateside was pretty much zero risk.

I'm not sure how I'd have handled Mr. AOW's being deployed to a war zone.
