The Political Logjam

BATTLING CHIMERAS
As all of us must know, the country has long been in the grip of two distinct disparate factions most commonly refer to as Left and Right.

Each of these works hard to get hold and maintain its grip on Power by portraying the other as a Deadly Enemy, and through fear-mongering over pet issues on which each side prefers to harp.

Right now it boils down to this:

The LEFT wants us to believe that the Great Advances of Civilization since the Industrial Revolution have damaged NATURE so greatly that the earth, itself will soon be unfit for human habitation. The Left would have us believe  that only the application of drastic, coercive, highly restrictive –– and very very expensive –– policies dreamt up by Leftist activists, intellectuals, politicians, and research scientists could possibly save the human race from extinction.

The RIGHT on the other hand is vigorously pushing the notion that The Greatest Threat to Civilization is to be found in alien, hostile, willfully destructive IDEOLOGIES such as Marxism and Islamic Fundamentalism run amok. The Right advocates very expensive policies that include arming ourselves to the teeth both personally through the increased acquisition of personal firearms and vastly increased military might.

Have you any ideas as to why each of these factions has chosen the agenda it has, and why neither side seems to want even to consider the possible merits of the other’s position?

Are we so in love with the kind of enmity born of bitter, entrenched factionalism that we prefer to be forever at loggerheads rather than find solutions to existential problems?

We should ask ourselves why we seem to prefer battling a series of man-made chimera to  putting our heads together in a serious attempt to combat the many things that really constipate progress and prolong agony, while perpetually deferring any attempt to neutralize or at least minimize things that truly imperil us.

We waste most of our energies battling each other instead of the things that diminish quality of life ‘round the globe.

WHY?

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917)

The place for the comforter is not that of one who preaches, but of the comrade who says nothing, but prays to God about the matter. The biggest thing you can do for those who are suffering is not to talk platitudes, not to ask questions, but to get into contact with God, and the “greater works” will be done by prayer (see John 14:12–13).

DIDADIN!

However illegal, impolitic, inadvisable, unconstitutional, un-American, immoral or impracticable others claim it to be we must adopt and maintain this position or perish.

When the Handwriting on the Wall sends a clear, uncompromising message, and STILL we fail to heed its stern warning, we DESERVE to be ECLIPSED.

FACE IT:
It's either
DIDADIN

Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863)

The Pig and the Rooster

On a warm sunny day, in the midst of July,
A lazy young pig lay stretched out in his sty,
Like some of his betters, most solemnly thinking
That the best things on earth are good eating and drinking.
At length, to get rid of the gnats and the flies,
He resolv'd, from his sweet meditations to rise;
And, to keep is skin pleasant, and pliant, and cool,
He plung'd him, forthwith, in the next muddy pool.

When, at last, he thought fit to arouse from his bath,
A conceited young rooster came just in his path:
A precious smart prig, full in vanity drest,
Who thought, of all creatures, himself far the best.
'Hey day! little grunter, why where in the world
Are you going so perfum'd, pomatum'd, and curl'd?
Such delicate odors my senses assail,
And I see such a sly looking twist in your tail,
That you, sure are intent on some elegant sporting;
Hurrah! I believe, on my life, you are courting;
And that figure which moves with such exquisite grace,
Combin'd with the charms of that soft-smiling face,
In one who's so neat and adorn'd with such art,
Cannot fail to secure the most obdurate heart.
And much joy do I wish you, both you and your wife,
For the prospect you have of a nice pleasant life.'

'Well, said, master Dunghill,' cried Pig in a rage,
'You're doubtless, the prettiest beau of the age,
'With those sweet modest eyes staring out of your head,
'And those lumps of raw flesh, all so bloody and red.
'Mighty graceful you look with those beautiful legs,
'Like a squash or a pumpkin on two wooden pegs.
'And you've special good reason your own life to vaunt,
'And the pleasures of others with insult to taunt;
'Among crackling fools, always clucking or crowing,
'And looking up this way and that way, so knowing,
'And strutting and swelling, or stretching a wing,
'To make you admired by each silly thing;
'And so full of your own precious self, all the time,
'That you think common courtesy almost a crime;
'As if all the world was on the look out
'To see a young rooster go scratching about.'

Hereupon, a debate, like a whirlwind arose,
Which seem'd fast approaching to bitings and blows;
'Mid squeaking and grunting, Pig's arguments flowing;
And Chick venting fury 'twixt screaming and crowing.
At length, to decide the affair, 'twas agreed
That to counsellor Owl they should straightway proceed;
While each, in his conscience, no motive could show,
But the laudable wish to exult o'er his foe.

Other birds, of all feather, their vigils were keeping,
While Owl, in his nook, was most learnedly sleeping:
For, like a true sage, he preferred the dark night,
When engaged in his work, to the sun's blessed light.
Each stated his plea, and the owl was required
To say whose condition should most be desired.
It seem'd to the judge a strange cause to be put on,
To tell which was better, a fop or a glutton;
Yet, like a good lawyer, he kept a calm face,
And proceeded, by rule, to examine the case;
With both his round eyes gave a deep-meaning wink,
And, extending one talon, he set him to think.

In fine, with a face much inclin'd for a joke,
And a mock solemn accent, the counsellor spoke --
''Twixt Rooster and Roaster, this cause to decide,
Would afford me, my friends, much professional pride.
Were each on the table serv'd up, and well dress'd,
I could easily tell which I fancied the best;
But while both here before me, so lively I see,
This cause is, in truth, too important for me;
Without trouble, however, among human kind,
Many dealers in questions like this you may find.
Yet, one sober truth, ere we part, I would teach ––
That the life you each lead is best fitted for each.
'Tis the joy of a cockerel to strut and look big,
And, to wallow in mire, is the bliss of a pig.
But, whose life is more pleasant, when viewed in itself,
Is a question had better be laid on the shelf,
Like many which puzzle deep reasoners' brains,
And reward them with nothing but words for their pains.
So now, my good clients, I have been long awake,
And I pray you, in peace, your departure to take.
Let each one enjoy, with content, his own pleasure,
Nor attempt, by himself, other people to measure.'

Thus ended the strife, as does many a fight;
Each thought his foe wrong, and his own notions right.
Pig turn'd, with a grunt, to his mire anew,
And He-biddy, laughing, cried –– Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!

_______ Definitions of a Liberal _______

1. Someone who ardently tells his children Santa Claus does not exist, but would bitch like hell if he did, because the jolly old elf might leave sooty footprints on the carpet.

2. Someone who would indignantly characterize A Visit from St. Nicholas as a Home Invasion, and call the police to have Santa taken away in handcuffs.

3. Someone who would deprive his children of sugar plums at Christmas, because sweets promote tooth decay.

4. Someone who would deeply resent the prancing and pawing of each little hoof on his rooftop for fear it might damage the shingles and cause a leak. He would then become even more irate, because his lawyer would tell him there was no one in particular he could sue.

Baragrinch Alas! came to town

 5. Someone outraged at the very idea that his long winter's nap might be disturbed by a sleigh full of toys born by eight tiny reindeer might descend on his roof with a clatter at any time after dark on Christmas Eve. Such a person would be apt to call a special meeting of the town council to demand legislation be written vigorously banning the Annual Visit for disturbing the peace.

6.Someone who scowls at each Christmas card he receives, because he A) wants to believe Christmas is a foolish myth dreamt up to extort money from gullible fools, and B) resents the notion that such gestures generally require a similar response of equally fake good will.

7. Someone who seeks to ban private displays of Christmas lights in his community, because they A) waste energy and thus harm the environment, and B) they are acutely insensitive to minorities, and represent an implicit threat and an affront to the dignity of atheists, agnostics, and members
of non-Christian religions.

8. Someone who routinely stages lectures in every forum imaginable telling Christians that their customary modes of celebrating the Birth of Christ are deeply rooted in pagan –– even savage
and barbaric –– prehistoric cultures.

Psalm 136 (KJV)
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 O give thanks unto the God of gods:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
4 To him who alone doeth great wonders:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
5 To him that by wisdom made the heavens:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
6 To him that stretched out the earth above the waters:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
7 To him that made great lights:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
8 The sun to rule by day:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
9 The moon and stars to rule by night:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
10 To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
11 And brought out Israel from among them:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
12 With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
13 To him which divided the Red sea into parts:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
14 And made Israel to pass through the midst of it:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
15 But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
16 To him which led his people through the wilderness:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
17 To him which smote great kings:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
18 And slew famous kings:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
19 Sihon king of the Amorites:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
20 And Og the king of Bashan:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
21 And gave their land for an heritage:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
22 Even an heritage unto Israel his servant:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
23 Who remembered us in our low estate:
for his mercy endureth for ever:
24 And hath redeemed us from our enemies:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
25 Who giveth food to all flesh:
for his mercy endureth for ever.
26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven:
for his mercy endureth for ever.

Clara and Robert Schumann at home c. 1840

FRAUENLIEBE und LEBEN

(Women's Life and Love)

A Cycle of Eight Songs by

ROBERT SCHUMANN (1810-1856)

I

Since first seeing him,
I think I am blind,
Wherever I look,
Him only I see;
As in a waking dream
His image hovers before me,
Rising out of deepest darkness
Ever more brightly.

All else is dark and pale
Around me,
My sisters’ games
I no more long to share,
I would rather weep
Quietly in my room;
Since first seeing him,
I think I am blind.

II

He, the most wonderful of all,
How gentle and loving he is!
Sweet lips, bright eyes,
A clear mind and firm resolve.

Just as there in the deep-blue distance
That star gleams bright and brilliant,
So does he shine in my sky,
Bright and brilliant, distant and sublime.
Wander, wander on your way,
Just to gaze on your radiance,
Just to gaze on in humility,
To be but blissful and sad!
Do not heed my silent prayer,
Uttered for your happiness alone,
You shall never know me, lowly as I am,
You noble star of splendour!
Only the worthiest woman of all
May your choice elate,
And I shall bless that exalted one
Many thousands of times.
Then shall I rejoice and weep,
Blissful, blissful shall I be,
Even if my heart should break,
Break, O heart, what does it matter?

III

I cannot grasp it, believe it,
A dream has beguiled me;
How, from all women, could he
Have exalted and favoured poor me?

He said, I thought,
‘I am yours for ever’,
I was, I thought, still dreaming,
After all, it can never be.
O let me, dreaming, die,
Cradled on his breast;
Let me savour blissful death
In tears of endless joy.

IV

You ring on my finger,
My golden little ring,
I press you devoutly to my lips,
To my heart.

I had finished dreaming
Childhood’s peaceful dream,
I found myself alone, forlorn
In boundless desolation.
You ring on my finger,
You first taught me,
Opened my eyes
To life’s deep eternal worth.
I shall serve him, live for him,
Belong to him wholly,
Yield to him and find
Myself transfigured in his light.
You ring on my finger,
My golden little ring,
I press you devoutly to my lips,
To my heart.

V

Help me, my sisters,
With my bridal attire,
Serve me today in my joy,
Busily braid
About my brow
The wreath of blossoming myrtle.

When with contentment
And joy in my heart
I lay in my beloved’s arms,
He still called,
With longing heart,
Impatiently for this day.
Help me, my sisters,
Help me banish
A foolish fearfulness;
So that I with bright eyes
May receive him,
The source of all my joy.
Have you, my love,
Really entered my life,
Do you, O sun, give me your glow?
Let me in reverence,
Let me in humility
Bow before my lord.
Scatter flowers, O sisters,
Scatter flowers before him,
Bring him budding roses.
But you, sisters,
I greet with sadness,
As I joyfully take leave of you.

VI

Sweet friend, you look
At me in wonder,
You cannot understand
How I can weep;
Let the unfamiliar beauty
Of these moist pearls
Tremble joyfully bright
In my eyes!

How anxious my heart is,
How full of bliss!
If only I knew
How to say it in words;
Come and hide your face
Here against my breast,
For me to whisper you
All my joy.
Do you now understand the tears
That I can weep,
Should you not see them,
Beloved husband?
Stay by my heart,
Feel how it beats,
That I may press you
Closer and closer.
Here by my bed
There is room for the cradle,
Silently hiding
My blissful dream;
The morning shall come
When the dream awakens,
And your likeness
Laughs up at me.

VII

On my heart, at my breast,
You my delight, my joy!

Happiness is love, love is happiness,
I’ve always said and say so still.
I thought myself rapturous,
But now am delirious with joy.
Only she who suckles, only she who loves
The child that she nourishes;
Only a mother knows
What it means to love and be happy.
Ah, how I pity the man
Who cannot feel a mother’s bliss!
You dear, dear angel, you,
You look at me and you smile!
On my heart, at my breast,
You my delight, my joy!

VIII

Now you have caused me my first pain,
But it struck hard,
You sleep, you harsh and pitiless man,
The sleep of death.

The deserted one stares ahead,
The world is void.
I have loved and I have lived,
And now my life is done.
Silently I withdraw into myself,
The veil falls,
There I have you and my lost happiness,
You, my world!

Poet Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838)

English translation of Chamisso's German text by Richard Stokes
