Barbara Bush (1925-2018)
Beloved source of character and strength.
An asset to her family and our nation
Refreshing for her lack of agitation.
Barbara lived a good life of great length.
Barbara lived a good life of great length.
A life patrician, gracious, down-to-earth
Regal, yet a quintessential mother
A fount of strong opinion like no other,
But muted, disciplined, and tinged with mirth.
Unusually poised in public life
She had an inner beauty very rare.
Happy to have prematurely aged
Resplendent in her crown of snow white hair
In no way mean, her mind always engaged,
Proud, yet humble, and always the ideal wife.

Wise words from Barbara Bush:
ReplyDeleteAt the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.
More quotations.
Thank you for that excellent contribution, AOW.

FT,
ReplyDeleteYou should send your sonnet to the Bush Family.
Thank you for that kind thought. If I knew how and where, I would send it to them, but I have no address.

DeleteThank you for the information, Mr. Cameltoe
DeleteNice tribute. The elder Bush's are nice folks.
ReplyDeleteI think the whole family could well be described as "nice," Silver, but as POLITICIANS very franky, every one of them left much to be desired.
DeleteBut this is not the right time to discuss politics. Out of respect for the deceased,–– and for her grieving husband of SEVENTY-THREE years ––, for once let us all try to proceed with as much grace, dignity and good decorum as possible,
I believe we owe at least THAT much to Mrs. Bush –– and frankly to OURSELVES as well.
Apparently the senior George Bush remained with his wife constantly durng her final hours. They were holding hands when sh.e breathed he last.
May sh Rest In Peace
ReplyDeleteShe sure was one of the Good Ones!
Thank you, DD. You too are one of the Good Ones.

ReplyDeleteFormer First Lady Barbara Bush Dies
Texas Monthly Magazine, by R.G. Ratcliffe
Born to affluence in Manhattan, Barbara Pierce Bush may not have been a Texan by birth, but she became one by choice and by love. She was just sixteen when she met a boy called Poppy Bush at a Christmas dance. They talked and then parted, writing letters to one another in the months that followed. Then he invited her to his senior prom at Phillips Academy Andover. As it concluded, he leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. That sweet moment led to 73 years of marriage to George Herbert Walker Bush, the future president of the United ...
What an uncouth, ungracious, clumsily written headline!
DeleteOne of those many cases where a simple statement of pure fact is nowhere near good enough to see print.
However, the body of the text shown is charming. Further proof that uthors ought to have the right to write their OWN headines.

ReplyDeleteHow I met Barbara Bush
Hot Air,
by Andrew Malcolm
I first met Barbara Bush in the living room of their Houston home. “What are you doing here?” was her greeting. I explained I was press secretary to her daughter-in-law Laura Bush as part of her son’s campaign to win the Republican presidential nomination. “Well, you better not break anything,” she ordered. Easier said than done. Anyone who’s ever overseen the setup for a network television interview knows it requires much moving of furniture so the interviewer and interviewees face each other in the most awkward, most forced-looking arrangement. As if they are to have a staring contest. Most important, it seems, is that the . . .

ReplyDeleteMy wife and I agree that this is one of your masterpieces. You hit Barbara Bush's essence in both content and form. Brilliantly composed and I agree with all the favorable observations. Thank you.
Your good opinion, my dear old friend, is much appreciated Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI have always admired Barbara Bush and thought she made an excellent First Lady. She was kind, intelligent, loved having family around and so much more.
People like her should be increasing in numbers not leaving life.
We need her common sense and love. Your poem is so well phrased. How do you crank out these wonderful pieces? Does it take you part of a day or only a few hours?
I admire what you can do more than I can say!
Oh thanks, Bronwyn, I don't see my ability to write acrostic sonnets as anything all that special. God gave me an uncanny facility with words. It showed up (I've been told) in my highchair days. ;-)
DeleteI was able to read whole books by age four, and started writing soon thereafter. Both my parents wrote very well, themse;ives. My mother was a true lyric poet; my father had a great faciliity for writing witty doggerel – a talent he used often to memorialize special occasions in the lives of family and friends. Neither parent took his talent seriously enough. Writing verse was just something they did for pleasure.
Whatever it is I have, I'm sure I inherited from them. I've just done a lot more of it, maybe because I am not as gifted as they were in ther more important areas..

ReplyDeleteBeautifully said. She was truly a First Lady
in every way; just as the President was a
gentleman. They set the bar high and the entire

held differing political views.
Thank you, Anna. I know you well enough to know that praise from you is praise, indeed.
DeleteThanks again.
I liked you until I head that you wrote on the PROGRESSIVE CREEPS. Blog.
ReplyDeleteNow I lost all my respect for you.
So you have no desire to build bridges or try to heal wounds –– only to blow bridges up, and aggravate abrasions with salt while strengthening the barriers that divide and keep us at odds, is that correct?
Deletef so, you are very foolish, and decidedly part of the PROBLEM –– not the SOLUTION.

DeleteI –– like most people –– always found Barbara Bush extremely likeable.
ReplyDeleteI don't care much for the things "pundits," "scholars," "historians," "critics," and "political operatives" say ABOUT anyone. However, I do care a great deal how the person in question comports him or herself in public.
I always got "good vibes' from Barbara Bush. If she was a termagant behind the scenes, I don't want to know about it.
As far as I'm concerned, Mrs. Bush was by far the most appealing First Lady in my lifetime, and my life began under Frankin Delano Roosevelt, whom I actually do remember. };^)>
