Twitter Blows Up With Racist Reactions After P.K. Subban Scores Game Winner In 2nd OT
May 2, 2014 6:21 AM
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Boston Bruins fans blew up Twitter Thursday night following the team’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
P.K. Subban ended up scoring the winning goal in the fifth minute of the second overtime.
Fans showing disappointment would have been completely understandable. But many of them took it to a whole other level, seeming to follow in the footsteps of Donald Sterling.
Because of our corporate policies, we can’t put profane language on our website, so here’s a summary of just some of the tweets we found:
– That stupid n***** doesn’t belong in hockey #whitesonly
– F*** YOU N***** SUBBAN YOU BELONG IN A F****** HOLE NOT AN ICE RINK
– PK Subban = F****** N*****
– F*** PK Subban. F****** n*****. Wish he got sold
– subban is the definition of a n*****
– Someone needs to smack PK subban across his big n***** lips. #scumbag
– SUBBAN IS A F****** PORCH M*****
– F*** that stupid m***** #subban
– F*** you subban you f****** lucky ass n*****!
– Once again, Subban stop being a n*****
– N***** was trending in Boston because P.K. Subban scored… It’s a rare moment in my life to be ashamed to be a Bruins fan.
– I bet the Bruins fans calling P.K. Subban a n***** on Twitter have no idea his brother plays for their minor league team.
– the hashtag #N***** is trending in Boston after Subban’s goal. Do they tweet this after a David Ortiz HR? f*** off Boston, be better.
– N***** trending in Boston- #NHL another sport with issues
Bruins President Cam Neely issued a statement concerning the racist tweets Friday afternoon.
“The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday’s game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization,” Neely said.
This could turn out to be a lively thread.
ReplyDeleteYa think? ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe shall see ...
Stay tuned ...
Individual's can't be racists. Only governments.
ReplyDelete...or larger "corporate" bodies. :P
ReplyDeleteWhat's the point? That there are racist Bruins fans? That there are racists in Boston? We already knew that. That attitude is everywhere, and it's ugly no matter where it exists. Good for Cam Neely, a class act, for distancing the Bruins from ignorant and hateful remarks.
ReplyDeleteNo one I know believes any part of this country, including blue Massachusetts, is immune from stupid people.
Every fan base has its dickheads.
ReplyDelete... and every dickhead has a fan base. Or so it would seem.
DeleteIndividuals can't be racist? Okay. I'll bite. How so?
ReplyDeleteThis thread reminded me of the first African-American NHL hockey player, Willie O'Ree. The Boston Bruins were the first NHL team to hire him:
ReplyDelete"Willie O'Ree was called up to the Boston Bruins of the NHL to replace an injured player. O'Ree was 95% blind in his right eye due to being hit there by an errant puck two years earlier, which normally would have precluded him from playing in the NHL. However, O'Ree managed to keep it secret, and made his NHL debut with the Bruins on January 18, 1958, against the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the first black player in league history, appearing in two games that year, and came back in 1961 to play 43 games, playing with Boston centreman Don McKenney and winger Jerry Toppazzini. He scored four goals and 10 assists in his NHL career, all in 1961.
O'Ree noted that "racist remarks were much worse in the U.S. cities than in Toronto and Montreal," the two Canadian cities hosting NHL teams at the time, and that "Fans would yell, 'Go back to the South' and 'How come you're not picking cotton?' Things like that. It didn't bother me. I just wanted to be a hockey player, and if they couldn't accept that fact, that was their problem, not mine."
The POINT?
ReplyDeleteSummed up neatly this ancient adage:
Sticks and stones may break by bones, but NAMES can never harm me."
~ Anonymous
ALSO:
"There's NOTHING either right or wrong but THINKING makes it so."
~ Will Shakespeare
The POINT is to emphasize the absurdity and hypocrisy of blanking out words like NIGGER, as though somehow SEEING it SPELT OUT could have the POWER to HARM.
The POINT is to DEFY, DENIGRATE, LAMPOON, DISMISS, CONDEMN, VILIFY and DESTROY the cancerous tumor of lies, evasions, denials comprising the despicable, rigorously ENFORCED CODE of INSTITUTIONALIZED INSINCERITY known as POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.
And THAT, dear friends, is a point well worth making.
Like Jefferson before me, I am bitterly and doggedly opposed to any from of tyranny over the Mind of Man.
I, personally, am also vehemently opposed to TABOOS and ANY kind of rigidly imposed ORTHODOXY.
If we are forced to swim in a cesspool, but are afraid to say it stinks for fear of ostracism and official punishment, we are no longer fully human.
It's a good thing to be a faithful SERVANT, but a very bad one to be a SLAVE.
In our misguided zeal to impose "Fairness and Equality" by main force or bust we have lost sight of the paramount importance of LIBERTY.
To right thinking people LIBERTY TRUMPS SAFETY, FAIRNESS -- and even DECENCY -- every single time. Millions have willingly sacrificed their LIVES in support of that precious ideal.
Willie O'Ree had it exactly right, Miss Shaw.
ReplyDelete1. He refused to accept the limitations others would have imposed on him for being "visually challenged," and just went on dong what he was so well able to do, because HE KNEW WHO HE WAS.
He didn't need "Official Sanction" or Special Permission" to be the great star he, apparently was.
2. Even more important he knew the ill opinion and ignorant views of others had NO POWER over HIM. He was his OWN MAN.
God bless Willie O'Ree! He understood instinctively what EVERYONE needs to learn sooner or later if he hopes to function well as an independent adult.
It is true that here in America people ARE free to call other people names, to use the words "nigger," "white trash," "wet back," "guinea," "limey," etc., which they do, as your post so clearly shows.
ReplyDeleteAnd people are free to condemn them.
Is that what you object to? The people who hear words and react to them, then use their freedom to say using such labels is not what a polite and civil society does?
And I would think you, of all people, would encourage people to promote civility and decency in how we treat one another.
You are not shy about letting people know how coarse our culture has become in its choices of pop music, art, literature, movies, etc. Sometimes your criticisms imply that our culture would be better off without what has advanced in our popular culture that coarsened it.
So I'm not sure I understand how defending people who would debase our cultural discourse by using old, unenlightened epithets to demean ethnic groups would be something someone would support.
the president is a schwarzer
ReplyDeleteWhat I deplore, Miss Shaw, is the pervasiveness of The Culture of Critique and Complaint, the ubiquity of Critical Theory, making a fetish of contrived Demonstrations, and loud Declarations of Outrage presumably on behalf of the unfortunate, ill-favored, and downtrodden, but really designed to gather and aggrandize the power of those who make them.
ReplyDeleteYou see, every moment spent moaning, groaning, accusing, rebuking, remonstrating and lamenting robs one of the opportunity to do something constructive, creative, fulfilling, fun, life-enhancing, joyful or delightful.
Oxymoronically what I HATE and refuse to TOLERATE about the Left is the HATRED and INTOLERANCE that lies at the heart and root of all their grim, dismal, humorless, sour-pussed, censorious, deeply unpleasant, pathetically shallow, bigoted, short-sighted initiatives and the maddeningly SMUG CONDESCENSION, ARROGANCE and nauseating SELF-CONGRATULATORY MANNER with which these dicta are presented.
I HATE HATE. I guess that makes me a bigot in the eyes of those who want believe their particular brand of hatred should be regarded as sacred, inviolable and above criticism.
The evil twins known as Critical Theory and Political Correctness have put us in this hopeless deadlock, and THEY would much prefer to see us all DEAD than ever budge an inch. The strength of the Left is derived from its absolute intransigence.
In other words, you are saying that YOU "Hate" progressives?
ReplyDeleteShame on you hating people by their political preference !
NOPE! I've had LOVE affairs with Liberals and Progressives, and have had a lifelong friendship with an out-and-out Communist.
ReplyDeleteI am perfectly capable of loving and enjoying an individual independent of his or her beliefs, BECAUSE --- unlike most "liberals" --- I am able to appreciate the WHOLE person and let my feelings be limited by the politics involved.
I despise "Identity Politics" because people should be taken as INDIVIDUALS first, last and always.
IF you read me carefully and thoughtfully with CURIOSITY, I make my views abundantly clear in well-phrased English.
On the other hand, if you approach with preconceived notions, the determination to find fault and cast aspersions, you will find exactly just you're looking for.
Wat I dislike most about leftists is their constant emphasis on negatives, their carping finger shaking attitudes, and insistence on always being seen as right no matter what.
I don't like these obnoxious qualities when they appear on the right either, which very sadly seems to be happening more and more.
But you don't recognize that the way in which you describe "the left" (without qualifying by using words such as "some" or "the extremists on the left," is exactly what you say you despise:
ReplyDelete"...what I HATE and refuse to TOLERATE about the Left is the HATRED and INTOLERANCE that lies at the heart and root of all their grim, dismal, humorless, sour-pussed, censorious, deeply unpleasant, pathetically shallow, bigoted, short-sighted initiatives and the maddeningly SMUG CONDESCENSION, ARROGANCE and nauseating SELF-CONGRATULATORY MANNER with which these dicta are presented." --F.T.
Those criticisms, without qualifications, embody all the things you attribute to "the left," and not individuals.
You state that you "HATE HATE," then you go on to tell us what you HATE about "the Left."
Strange.
Love the point and counterpoint. As an objective bystander sitting this one out I'd say Shaw has the edge on this one.

ReplyDeleteSeems like only yesterday that the self-righteous sanctimony of the world was directed at one Donald Stering/Tokowitz. And in retrospect that seems richly ironic especially coming from the the resident Beantown progressive/Marxist (a.k.a. Ducky}.
ReplyDeleteJust more ingrained Boston Brahmin racism that seems to have become a pattern. Another recent victim: "Joel Ward 2012"
Hope your Depends aren't still wadded up your hypocritical ass, Ducky.
"Joel Ward 2012"
ReplyDeleteObviously more than a "slight coincidence" ...
Well, my dear Ms Shaw, I did qualify what I said by referring to it as oxymoronic, which indeed it is.
ReplyDeleteBeing human, itself, is patently absurd on the face of it, but here we are anyway.
As for being "strange," I believe we all have a share in that at times. And then there are other times when we are perfectly beautiful.
As Goodman Ace said long ago on the radio to his wife Jane, "You've got to take the bitter with the better." Or maybe it was she who said it to him.
Even I am too young to remember Easy Aces, but I heard enough about it early on to feel I somehow must have been a member of the audience. It was a New York thing.
"Life is just a bowl of cherries." Most of them are delicious, but every once in a while you find a rotten one. It's best not to let that spoil your good opinion of all the rest.
Another irony is that Subban's brother is a well regarded goaltender for the Bruins' Providence minor league team.
ReplyDeleteThey also have a black forward on their firs line.
Not a team with a history of racism and I doubt the social media clowns even attended the game.
@Waylon --- Seems like only yesterday that the self-righteous sanctimony of the world was directed at one Donald Stering/Tokowitz.
ReplyDelete-----
What, the Jacobs brothers were the ones tweeting?
Are you are so stupid that you don't recognize the difference between a few punks and the team owner?
Slow even for a Randoid, Waylon.
Well Ducky it's obviously a racist attitude that's deeply ingrained in the Beantown psyche. Not something that's only shown it's ugly face with P. K. Subban and Joel Ward.
ReplyDeleteYou do recall the ugly hatefulness exposed with the school busing issue of the 1970's, don't you? Same shit.
Whine a bit more Karl Marximus.
No Waylon, I haven't forgotten busing and Boston has changed a great deal since then.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this incident is equivalent to the busing years.
Stop being an idiot.
Individuals can't be racist? Okay. I'll bite. How so?
ReplyDeleteLike the belief that black can't be racists, because they haven't got the "power". We have a black President and Attorney General. They certainly have the power now to be "racist".
Individuals, in America, are pretty powerless. They all have 'private' prejudices, but no power to impose those prejudices upon the rest of us. The only ones who "can" are in government of large social bodies like corporations. They are the only ones with the "power" to impose racist pogroms.
Good answer, Thersites. Your point was crying to be made.
ReplyDeleteI would have eradicated Ducky's foul-mouthed sneering, but once someone has responded to that kind of thing, I feel obliged to let it stand.

By the way, Ducky, -- and others -- if you think someone is an idiot, you'd make a much better case by presenting evidence to support the opinion rather than merely resorting to name-calling and naked insults. The practice is not only vulgar, it's inadequate, and tends to make YOU look mentally deficient.
What I am trying to do here is remove the false power attributed to certain words by agenda-driven leftists. I refuse to knuckle under to would-be despots, so I FEATURE words like NIGGER every once in a while.
Expect to see items featuring JAP, CHINK, GOOK, WOG, SPIC, KIKE, MICK, CUNT, SHIT, PISS, FART and FUCK before it's all over.
I regard taboos of ANY kind as abhorrent.
I have dear friends who think otherwise, and would be heartbroken or furious at me for "betraying" the proper sense of values and modes of decorum by which we were raised.
HOWEVER, there is a larger point at issue -- the threat of Mind Control through arbitrary speech codes enforced by the imminent threat of expulsion from a school, club or service organization, firing from a job, confiscation of personal property, official ostracism and even, if we follow Lost Europe's pathetic, demoralizing lead, JAIL.
We have already skidded off the Slippery Slope and have fallen into the Abyss.
There is nothing "righteous" about righteous behavior engendered at the point of a gun. That, dear friends, is TYRANNY.
FUNNY! I never thought of calling anyone a "nigger" in my life, UNTIL the DemonRats decided to make it ILLEGAL.
(O)CT(O)PUS the Progressive blogger is an outstanding and highly-principled blogger who I regard as incredibly awesome. (O)CT(O)PUS strongly believes that we should all try to get along and converse without being rude, no matter our political beliefs... and I agree completely.
ReplyDeleteFact is I believe (O)CT(O)PUS is a role model to all Progressive’s, and to anyone of any political stripe should seek to emulate. We all could learn a thing or two from the amazing (O)CT(O)PUS . Even those who disagree with him politically. This is just a fact. And, being an individual who is superior to most people myself, you can trust me to accurately identify "amazing" when I see it. When you put (O)CT(O)PUS’s work next to any of the popular Conservative bloggers, they look stupid, and inept.
I happen to like, or should I say “love” the blend of quasi-philosophical and profane honesty in everything that is said from (O)CT(O)PUS.....
"FUNNY! I never thought of calling anyone a 'nigger' in my life, UNTIL the DemonRats decided to make it ILLEGAL."
ReplyDeleteIt is NOT illegal.
Let's not get carried away by hyperbole. If using the word "nigger" were "ILLEGAL," this blog would have been shut down long ago.
What you seem to be angry at is the right of people whose politics you do not like, i.e. liberals, to criticize the use of the word. It positively sends you into paroxysms of rage when people who have a different point of view exercise their right to disagree. You then go on and accuse them of being the most hideous of human beings on the planet, responsible for catastrophe you imagine them to have caused our national culture. More hyperbole.
If you're free to use what most reasonable people think are degrading terms to describe different cultures, then please proceed, Mr. Free Thinke, but don't complain when people criticize the use of those words. That criticism is just as much their right as yours is to use such labels and demand that we not be bothered by it.
Hugh Farnham wrote a fine post today at Western Hero on using cries of "RACIST" to gain a death grip on political power.
ReplyDeleteThis was my response to it:
BRAVO! Depicting anyone different from oneself or unsympathetic to one's point of view as Evil, Stupid and Dangerous is at the heart of ALL human conflict. Fierce denunciations of RACISM, ANTI-SEMITISM, HOMOPHOBIA, BIGOTRY, MALE-CHAUVINISM, NATIVISM, FASCISM, etc. are just the latest in a long series going back millennia no doubt.
The only thing NEW about any of it has been the despicable practice of making a CAREER out of aggressive, self-righteous Denunciation, Vilification, Endless Inquisition, Endless Complaint, Endless Criticism and Complete Rejection of The Other.
When these leftists ask you questions they don't really want to hear your answer, there desire is to exhaust you and break you down through incessant badgering, until finally you CAPITULATE -- you CONFESS to whatever "crime" they accuse you of, just because it MIGHT get them to SHUT UP.
This is what these types do. To learn more about these despicable tactics read about the Frankfurt School, Critical Theory, and Cultural Marxism.
It's all abut BULLYING people into SUBMISSION.
It's interesting (I suppose) that anyone fails to recognize WHY words like nigger are inappropriate, offensive, and that the use of such words says a lot about those using the word and NOTHING about the individual (or group) being spoke to or about.
ReplyDeleteWhile it may be a right to use whatever derogatory, bogoted, racist, offensive language a person or group chooses to use, it is also the RIGHT of decent, considerate. understanding, and reasoned individuals and groups to RAISE their voice(s) against such gutterall, base, irrational, and odious utterances.
Call it respect and respect for decency.
You certainly DO have that right, Miss Shaw, but I would insist that the Marxian-Communist-Socialist-Fabian-Liberal-Progressive-Democrat faction fired the First Shot in this battle over a hundred years ago, and have thus forced those who don't subscribe to their coercive collectivist, falsely egalitarian views to respond in order to avoid being totally subsumed and obliterated by the Communist Juggernaut.
ReplyDeleteThe Marxian, faux-humanitarian faction has made tremendous inroads in exactly the manner described in my previous post and elsewhere. It has used with regrettable success the power of Endless Insults delivered with Brazen Effrontery.
I am not the only one who is sick to death and fed up to the teeth with the endless barrage of bilious rhetoric. It's true we are, indeed, "fighting fire with fire," but the Left has given us no choice other than surrender -- an untenable position.
Les, I'm sorry to have to say it, but your sanctimonious, puerile observations show you to be absolutely CLUELESS.
ReplyDeleteJust agree to disagree and begone.
With all due respect FreeThinke I really do not care about YOUR self righteous, narrow minded, and factually deficient ravings. Clueless is as clueless does.
ReplyDeleteGood day FreeThinke, enjoy your Sunday.
What's been running through my mind as I follow all comments made to this blog post...
ReplyDeleteOriginally written as a commentary on the cultural concept of the definition of beauty, The Twilight Zone episode "Eye of the Beholder" (1960) could also be interpreted as a commentary on which words are considered offensive -- and by whom.
The full TZ episode is HERE.
Here is a fact that seems to be lost in this discussion:
ReplyDeleteYou and countless other Americans are NOT barred from using such epithets and labels. What has changed is that a considerable number of Americans now find the use of those degrading terms unacceptable in a civil society.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with your litany of pejoratives against "DemonRATS."
See? People are still free to call anyone they hate any stupid name they can imagine.
Your characterization of push-back against this behavior as "...Marxian-Communist-Socialist-Fabian-Liberal-Progressive-Democrat
...coercive collectivist, falsely egalitarian...Communist Juggernaut." is, IMO an over-the-top reaction to what happens in a culture when it matures and learns to see people as individuals on their merits, and not continue to defame whole cultural groups because of the rotten apples in the barrel.
I've expressed almost the same sentiment as has Les. So I'll be gone, too.
ReplyDeleteBlah, blah, blah.
Then why do no "progressives" get accept when black people use the words?
Hypocrites.
The "reason" is that progressives show "grace" when black people say it, assuming it's NOT being used in a derogatory manner, yet never afford "conservative whites" the same "benefit of the doubt."
Right, my niggas?
We (conservatives) can NEVER be allowed to become so attached to and/or "familar" with black people as to be able to "share" the obscene. It would ruin the Democrat Party political project.
"Get upset" v. "get", above.
ReplyDeleteThersites,
ReplyDeleteThe double standard that you mentioned is a chasm that will never be bridged.
Word use double standards are de facto proof of an ideological bias and an ongoing political project.
ReplyDeleteI suggest everyone go over to Western Hero and read Hugh Farnham's excellent post on the way the Left has used charges of "racism" -- a term apparently coined by TROTSKY, wouldn't you know? -- to gain political advantage.
ReplyDeleteHugh uses much more temperate language than I, but has made essentially the same point, perhaps more convincingly.
Our society has NOT "matured," it has instead rotted from within. I sincerely believe this has occurred because our minds have been subjected to a slow-acting poison injected by stealth at first into our intellectual and spiritual systems by diabolically clever, incredibly persistent and tenacious malicious malcontents who have made a career out of bringing us down.
Naturally, those who champion this process and believe it a right and necessary thing are never going to admit the ruinous effects it has wrought.
Unfortunately, to use current parlance, "it is what it is." And we are stuck with it. Anyone who would deem the ravages of the past hundred years "progress" must be out of his mind.
Supplanting one set of admittedly undesirable conditions with another that's far worse. It's the French, Russian, Chinese and Cuban revolutions all over again.
The object should be to rid the world of TYRANNY altogether not to exchange one set of despots for another.
FT,
ReplyDeleteThat's a good post over at Western Hero.
I voted for the comment you made, BTW.
And, now, in a few minutes, I'm going to shut down my computer and go read Carl Hiassen's Bad Monkey. Comic relief!
Thanks, AOW. I was familiar with that episode of The Twilight Zone, but I looked at it once again. It's very well acted.
ReplyDeleteIt may seem to be about the different ways people perceive the same object, but I think it's even more about the pressure to CONFORM and the terrible PUNISHMENT meted out to anyone who is DIFFERENT from the prevailing norm in any given culture.
No matter where we go or what period of history we revisit each ethnic, racial, religious or political group MUST have something OTHER to loathe, despise and persecute.
I see it as the Central Flaw in Human Nature -- the Seed Within Us that generates human tragedy once it germinates.
Once again, Miss Emily comes to the rescue having said all that ever needed to be said on the subject in her uniquely eloquent voice long before any of us were born:
ReplyDeleteMuch Madness is divinest Sense --
To a discerning Eye --
Much Sense -- the starkest Madness --
’Tis the Majority
In this, as all, prevail --
Assent - and you are sane --
Demur - you’re straightway dangerous --
And handled with a Chain --
~ Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

FT,
ReplyDeleteI think it's even more about the pressure to CONFORM and the terrible PUNISHMENT meted out to anyone who is DIFFERENT from the prevailing norm in any given culture.
That's what I was getting at.
FT,
ReplyDeleteIn my view, "A Wry Observation" is correct.
The lust to be enraged is one of the plagues of humanity.
