The other day our friend Kid reported on the meticulous, painstaking, time-consuming, incredibly exacting standards those who guard The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier must adhere to regarding their uniforms and personal appearance.  At first I thought, “Isn’t that a bit much?” but then the following thoughts occurred to me.

Impressive, indeed, –– and a superb answer to the leftist destructionists and thoughtless redneck rubes who urge doing away with the Royal Family and all the pageantry that characterizes the heart and soul of once-but-Alas-no-longer-Great Britain.

SYMBOLS are of vital importance –– especially when they are LIVING symbols. That's why maintaining these seemingly ridiculous high standards described in Kid’s article are vitally important. It's not the uniforms –– or even the men who wear them –– that matter; it's the ideals and principles they REPRESENT. 

Once a nation denigrates, disrespects and discards the SYMBOLS of its past and potential glory that nation loses its identity and soon becomes moribund.

In plainer language: 

Can you imagine a U.S. President, a Senator, a Representative, a Supreme Court Justice –– or your children's Schoolteacher for that matter –– performing their duties unshaven with unbrushed teeth, and uncombed hair in baggy, threadbare jeans and a dirty T-shirt after not having bathed for a month?

THINK About That.

      Evil and Stupidity may be symbollzed too. Not all symbols are good. That's where a proper grounding in Good Deportment and Moral Education SHOULD come in, but no longer does thanks to depredations visited on us by the Left –– Cultural Marxism, German Weltschmerz and "French Thought." };^)>.

      Progressivism has NOT helped us to progress, instead it has caused us to DEGENERATE.

      You can rehabilitate symbols...

      The german hard rock band Rammstein are often accused of flirting and playing with nazi militaristic iconography But if one observers closely their show one can see very nicely what they are doing, exemplarily in one of their best known songs "Reise reise". The minimal elements of the nazi ideology enacted by Rammstein are something like pure elements of libidinal investment. Enjoyment has to be as it were condensed in some minimal ticks, gestures which do not have precise ideological meaning. What Rammstein does is it liberates these elements from their nazi articulation. It allows us to enjoy them in their pre-ideological state. The way to fight nazism is to enjoy these elements, ridicoulous as they were here, by suspending the nazi horizon of meaning. This way you undermine nazism from within. - Zizek

Sounds like a couple of fellows I used to work with: Guadalcanal Marines....

      A Marine in the field can be found dirty and sweaty, but in garrison, a Marine is none of those things!

      It's a lot like the dfference between my father dressed as he always was in a starched white shirt with suit and tie to go to work or to church, and my father dressed in overalls to work in his vegetable garden on weekends, or to paint lawn furniture, etc.

    I fully agree. I had a HS baseball coach who emphasized the importance of respecting the game.
    Run out every play
    Never show up another player
    Wear your uniform properly
    Show the losing team respect
    Respect the umpires
    Practice seriously

    These small things may sound silly to players today but I honestly believe Coach's lessons help get me that baseball schorship to Seton Hall....thanks Coach
