It's an interesting idea. But Puerto Ricans themselves are very divided on the issue, such that it would be very difficult overcome that, let alone how the rest of America would feel. I think Carson knows that outcome is extremely unlikely, as does Bush and Rubio, hence they must believe whatever xenophobic votes they lose for the position, they get more Latino vote in return.

A unlikely scenario. Given Puerto Ricans are greatly divided on the issue, even as they receive many benefits from the USA, and many, if not most Americans do not presently support statehood for Puerto Rico not sure why Carson favors it. More likely than not Carson knows it ain't gonna happen so Jersey is probably right.. Carson made a calculated political decision it would render him a plus in the race for votes should he win the GOP nomination.

DeleteIt would not pose a problem for me. Although I would oppose any move to require Puerto Ricans currently living in the states to return to their native land. Silverfiddle pointed out Puerto Ricans living in the USA vote for president; free them and remove their ability to do so.,
DeleteReally, they should have been made a state years ago. It's a shame we were never able to do that. Now, we may never see that happen. A perpetual status quo regardless of whether they are "independent" or not.

Strategically, Puerto Rican statehood looks like a political endorsement (Hispanics).

DeleteIf you clicked on the headlines linked, you'd see that many on the right are VIRULENTLY opposed to any such idea, and say they are now abandoning Dr. Carson on the strength of this report.
Have you an opinion about THAT?
They can do whatever they like. But if you ask me, Carson has positioned himself very well for the "general" election. If he can squeek by Trump (who's hispanic support may be questionable), I think he has a pretty good chance.
DeleteAnd I don't give a whit about PR Statehood. I've been to Puerto Rico. It makes a good vacation destination and base for projecting power south (we used to get our supplies from PR and Panama). Other than that, I see no advantages/disadvantages to the statehood proposition.

1/3 of PR is on food stamps supplied by us (even though puerto ricans pay no federal income tax.} At present they can't vote for president but statehood would mean they could and they would be solidly democrat.' And they a;ready benifit from our stupid gravy train. Or as the libs call it entittlements.

DeleteThis is a standard and perennial GOP pitch for Hispanic votes. Most Puerto Ricans live in the US mainland, and as residents of one of the 50 states, they vote for president.

ReplyDeleteI have come to the conclusion that Ben Carson is a bit nuts. I say that not because I disagree with him politically, but because he doesn’t seem to know what the truth is. Donald Trump, in contrast, does. When challenged, he becomes more forceful. He exhales a gale of fibs and just shoulders his way through until his interrogator, some hapless journalist, surrenders. Carson, though, is unusually serene. He gives me the willies.
And as for Rubio, how is it possible that a monster capable of saying such a thing is a serious contender for any position other than Misogynist of the Year? If Rubio gets the nomination, this statement alone should be enough to sink him."
Absolutely. It is a monstrous idea from a hare-brained neophyte who can't manage his own finances but would institute a sort of Pregnancy SS to track down victims of rape.
If someone had told me even 4 years ago that a serious GOP contender for the presidency proposed such a totalitarian scheme, I would suggest deep psychological therapy. And yet Rubio has no problem suggesting something a rogue police state would institute. Rubio is obviously as mad (as in mentally challenged) as Carson. The both of them have done something I never thought could be done: Rubio is clearly nuts..
They make Trump look reasonable. What a circus....
And keep in mind, that these candidates are supposedly the crème de la crème of the T-GOP, the people who crank about the government invading our lives, and yet they turn a blind eye to their candidates when they propose the most invasive government snooping.
Can anyone imagine a more hare-brained idea than tracking down women who were victims of rape to make sure they don't abort the state-forced pregnancy? Or sending government agents to college campuses to report on who's engaging in politically biased speech?
Also, on another note: Republicans love to talk about how Democrats take money from good, hardworking Americans and give it to lazy deadbeats. That story is the meme right-wingers use when they cut welfare, it’s how they frame their war against Obamacare, and it’s how they justify doing awful heartless things like slashing funding for school lunch programs.
But it’s becoming increasingly clear that Republicans don’t actually believe their own talking points. And you don’t need to look any farther than the parade of Clowns they have running for the nomination.

ReplyDeleteI can't help but wonder when Obsma will issue an executive order demanding everyone say Happy Holiday instead of Merry Christmas.. I know that it's coming.
As for the last debate, I would say that the big standouts were Rubio , Cruz, and Fiorina while all the other candidates still did much better than their progressive socialist democrat opponents. Donald Trump was more mellow, and that was a positive thing, he looked more like a credible candidate; possibly because some responses were moderated by indications of audience disapproval.
ReplyDeleteRubio looked presidential. Carly Fiorina was a standout when it came to specificity. Bush did not rise to the occasion. Carson was did help repair previous perceptions. Rand Paul had some questionable answers on the funding of the military and our involvement in world affairs. He shows that the "nut" dosn't call too fare from the tree, as bothe he and his father are bothe a bit nuttie. Both Jeb Bush and John Kasich should think of packing it in, as neither stand a chance in hell.
