Silly Songs I Loved in Childhood
I Didn’t Know
the Gun Was Loaded
The Andrews Sisters
[NOTE: The three Andrews Sisters (LaVerne, Maxine and Patty) started their careers during the 1930s. They were born in Mound, Minnesota USA. Interestingly, the three girls had different vocal ranges, perhaps a bit unusual considering the fact that they were all born within 7 years of each other (soprano, mezzo and contralto). The Sisters were known for their outstanding support of the allied troops during WWII, working onsite as well as recording on V-Discs. They performed over the radio and made numerous personal appearances on TV as well as many charitable functions. They cut over 700 songs, selling over 90 million records.]
Patsy Montana
Oh Miss Effie was her name
Through the west she won her fame
Being handy with the gun
But she drove the men insane.
'Cause she'd whip out her pistol
And shoot most any guy
And sing out this alibi.
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again.
But one night she made a slip
Shot the sheriff in the hip
So the law, it took a hand
And made Effie take the stand.
And she pled, "Oh, your honor
I'll know you'll turn me loose
When you hear my one excuse."
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again.
I didn't know (she didn't know)
The gun was loaded (that the gun was loaded)
But regarding the gun that I toted.
All I did was hold it high
And go (4 simulated firing sounds)
I'll never, never do it again.
Yes, the jury all agreed
That Miss Effie should be freed
But the sheriff's jealous wife
Was indignant (yes, indeed)
So she borrowed a pistol
And shot this village belle
And sang as Miss Effie fell.
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'm so sorry my friend
I didn't know the gun was loaded
And I'll never, never do it again.
I didn't know (she didn't know)
The gun was loaded (that the gun was loaded)
But regarding the gun that I toted
All I did was hold it high
And go (4 simulated firing sounds)
I'll never, never do it again.

ReplyDeleteDD, you're a good guy, but please try to remember that we do NOT talk to TROLLS at this blog. It's a waste of everyone's time, and just takes conversation away from the point of the post.
DeleteThanks.
No problem, it was just that I got so fustrated by that "So Called Proffessor PhD"..LOL.
DeleteAgain, I'm sorry...
Not to worry; I know your heart is in a good place, DD.
DeleteTry never to let the bastards get your goat. If you do, they win. :-(
DeleteEither talk about the SONG, the Andrews Sisters, Patsy Montana, or even humorous "novelty songs" in general, OR don't talk at all.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
OK,Being a big fan of Pop music, I am very familia with the Andrews Sisters, and I remember their many hits such as the "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", "Bei Mir Bist Du Shon", " Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" "Rum and Coca Cola" and "Beer Barrel Polka", and their many movies with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope,.. They almost always wore US WAC's uniforms. .
ReplyDeletePopular in the same time as the Big Bands like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Buddy Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey...
GOSH! You must be almost as old as I am, and here I've taken you for a youngster all along. I heard his stuff in my CRADLE and EVERYWHERE ELSE all through my childhood.
DeleteThis fun music and the movies from the late 1940's and into the '50's are all we have left of the America That Was.
Wasn't it wonderful?
How could we have lost it so fast?

ReplyDeleteWHEW! The HATRED that went into making that video projects an aura so thick you could cut it with a knife.
DeleteBu I have to admit he object of the ridicule is in many ways such a caricature of herself it's hard NOT to lampoon her.
Another Icon of Bad Taste and Bad Judgment on the part of the GOPRINO Establishment.
I remember this number very well, FT. Asinine, of course, but very funny all the same. I hadn't thought of it in sixty years or more. How do you remember these things so well that you can dredge them up for us?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it's a nice change of pace, even if it is nonsense.

Awfully good to see YOU here, Katharine. It's been a long time.
DeleteA little asininity is good for the soul. Certainly beats heavy doses of vitriol, doesn't it? ;-)
Reductive, repetitive, frivolous and unsophisticated. Why not simply record a burlap bag of shaken cats yowling accompanied by farting into an empty toilet tissue tube?
ReplyDeleteYou haven't had much fun in life, have you?
DeleteWhat a pity!
I hope you have better luck next time around.
